What Steps or Stairs Do I need?
When designing your steps or staircase, we begin with a thorough site survey to assess the rise and run, ensuring a perfect fit for your landscape. Using advanced tools like laser levels and altimeters, we guarantee precision and stability in every build. Material selection is based on both structural needs and aesthetic preferences, with options including engineered stone, natural stone, treated lumber, and decorative rock infill. What's Under Our Steps?
At Clover Landscaping, we build steps and stairs with a strong foundation, ensuring durability and stability. Each riser is supported by a 6-8 inch compacted aggregate sub-base, leveled in 2-inch layers using gas-powered equipment. A final 10mm limestone layer provides precision leveling. Treads, made from high-quality pre-cast stone, rest on 4-6 inches of compacted aggregate for a solid base. To prevent shifting, each riser interlocks securely into the tread below, creating a long-lasting, heave-resistant structure.
Building Upwards
Once the base is compacted and leveled, we construct each riser sequentially, ensuring a stable and precise build. Every footing is prepped, compacted, and leveled up to the top of the previous riser. We continuously reference the base step to maintain proper rise and run throughout the staircase. Riser caps are secured, and the final landing is crafted from high-quality pre-cast stone products. These meticulous building practices guarantee sturdy, well-designed stairs that enhance your landscaping for years to come.
Why Not Concrete?
We always recommend pre-cast stone over concrete for several reasons.
- Concrete often cracks very quickly in Alberta, and ends up being much more expensive and less professional looking.
- Pre-cast stone is less prone to cracking
- Concrete will need to be ripped up and re-done or left with large cracks that create an ugly eyesore in your landscaping.
- Concrete gives a more sterile and basic look, and does not provide much aesthetic value. Whereas pre-cast stone can be colour arranged, bordered, and textured to provide more depth to the look of the landscaping in your yard.
