Precision Grading
When we visit for your free consultation, we take precise grade and area measurements using advanced tools like altimeters and laser levels, combined with our decades of expertise. Proper grading is the most critical step in building a patio that is durable, functional, and ensures proper water runoff.
Understanding your property’s elevation and grading is essential for a successful patio installation. As trusted patio installers near you, we carefully determine the starting height and incorporate a slight pitch (or drop) for water drainage. Our standard grading practice includes a 1.5” drop every 10 feet, sloping away from your home. This ensures effective runoff without creating a sloped or uneven sitting area.

Excavation & Base Preparation
Once we’ve determined the proper grade, it’s time to excavate! Using our precise surveyed measurements, we dig 7-8 inches to create a stable foundation. All excavated soil and clay are then hauled to the Calgary landfill.
Our team conducts a final survey using altimeters to confirm the correct height and grade. Next, we compact the exposed soil to create a solid base, reducing the risk of settling and ensuring long-term patio stability.
This meticulous excavation and base preparation lays the groundwork for a durable, professionally built patio that will last.
Installing & Compacting Sub-base
We start by layering and compacting road crush every 2 inches to create a solid, stable foundation. For most residential patios and walkways, we use recycled crushed aggregate as the sub-base.
Once the proper sub-base depth is achieved, we add a 10mm layer of limestone fines to perfect the levelling process. The limestone is spread, compacted, and screeded to a smooth, even finish—verified with precision landscape levels and altimeters. Since most pavers have a 1/16-inch variability, this process ensures the final patio surface is perfectly level, with seamless alignment between pavers.
Prepping for Paver Installation
With the limestone base fully prepared, we set up string line guides to ensure precise alignment. Proper positioning is essential, so we carefully lay the pavers square to your home or nearby structures—a key landscaping practice that enhances both stability and aesthetics.
We begin by installing the paver pattern, followed by the border (if included in your design), ensuring a seamless, professional finish.
By following this meticulous paver installation process, we create a patio that is both visually stunning and built to last.
Adding a Border
The border is where we can enhance the visual appeal of your paver patio, adding both depth and colour. There are several border design options to choose from, including matching your patio’s colour, selecting an accent colour for contrast, or even creating a double border (inlay) for a unique, customized look.
Once the pavers are in place, adding the border is the final step in completing your patio, giving it a polished, high-end finish.
Securing Your Patio:
To ensure your patio remains stable over time, we add “snap-edge” edging as a restraint to keep the pavers in place. This edging is set 1 inch below the top of the pavers, then covered with topsoil or aggregate to seamlessly blend with your design.
Next, we fill the joints between the pavers with G2 polymeric sand. This special sand is carefully swept into the joints while we use a gas-powered roller tamper to vibrate the sand through the gaps. Once the sand is in place, we activate it by adding water. The polymeric sand expands and hardens when wet, creating a strong bond that not only secures the pavers but also prevents weeds from growing between them.
