Spring Clean Ups FAQs
In our Gold packages we provide the following:
• Core Aeration
• Power raking
• Hand raking
• Cut & trim
• Spring fertilizer
• Overseeding
• Light blow out of debris from flower beds and walkways
This package is our more budget-friendly option. For those who want to do the bulk of the cleanup themselves, but don’t have an aerator and power rake laying around their shed. We’ll run the machines, bag up the thatch, and leave the rest to you!
Nothing is more important to a lawn than proper water/air circulation. With a spring cleanup, your lawn will absorb more of the water that it receives as well as allow proper air circulation. This combination will allow more root development, better fertilizer/herbicide adsorption, and a healthier, greener lawn all around.
Core aeration is the process of removing small cores of soil from your lawn. This reduces soil compaction, allows more air and water to enter deep into your lawn and promotes root growth. Other benefits of Core Aeration are:
· Thatch will break down easier
· Water will not pool, and runoff grass
· Fertilizer will be more readily absorbed
· Turf grass roots will grow stronger
· Grass will be provided with more cushioning and resiliency
· The ability to withstand heat and drought will be increased.
There are many types of aeration out there on the market, however, coring is the only effective way to reduce compaction.
Spike/foot aerators spread soil, but without coring to allow displaced soil to settle, they will leave it more compacted. At Clover we use deep-tine core aerators to fully remove deep cores and allow your grass to spread out and breathe.
Perhaps most misunderstood by homeowners, is the benefit of power raking.
Power raking is the process of pulling up the layer of thatch if left to sit on top of your *turf*. Thatch is the buildup of dead decomposing grass and plant matter that builds up over time. If left to sit on top of your roots, thatch will prevent water, air, sunlight, and fertilizer from reaching your roots. On top of this, it can also promote unwanted disease and insects.
We will assess your level of thatch, set our equipment to the proper setting to pull up the right amount of thatch without harming your root system or over raking. There should always be a small layer of thatch remaining to provide soil shading and water retention.
Too much thatch and a lawn can’t breathe, too little and a lawn will dry out. The proper balance is about a 1/4″ layer of thatch.
After power raking, all thatch that is pulled up by our rakes will then be gathered and bagged to be left in your green bin for the composting facility.
We use a specialty slow-release spring fertilizer with the right balance of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium. To compliment this, we also use a specialty blend of grass seed that will promote blade strength and the formation of new roots.
After the cleanup is the ideal time to fertilize/overseed. We make sure your grass gets the right nutrients at the right time.
